How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are various pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine without sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher check here RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not certain what to do, i feel i have pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, check here and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up).
